High Blood Pressure
Blood pressure is the measure of the force of the blood pushing against the walls of the arteries – the blood vessels that carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body. When the heart contracts to pump out blood, the peak of contraction is called systolic pressure. After pumping, the heart relaxes and pressure drops to its lowest point just before a new beat. That lowest point is called the diastolic pressure.

Arteriosclerosis

If you ever heard of the expression "I have hardening of the arteries" that person is referring to that fact he has arteriosclerosis {pronounced ahr-tir-ee-oh-skluh-roh'-sis}, because that is the meaning of this Greek word. Arteriosclerosis describes many diseases involving the cardiovascular system and its associated arteries and vessels which go along with it. Arteriosclerosis is not something that happens overnight. It takes many years for the arteries to become hard and brittle. In time the vessels become thickened and lose their elasticity. This happens because of a lack of calcium in the walls.
