Although many patients have few problems after bariatric surgery, there is the potential for complications, both small and large, just as there is with any surgical procedure. Minor complications can include dietary intolerance, hair loss, dry skin, menstrual irregularities, or pain. Other complications that may occur include dumping, stenosis, a narrowing of the gastric pouch’s outlet, vitamin or mineral deficiencies and anemia, gallstones, and vomiting caused by stretching the pouch.

A Look at Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery

Most bariatric surgeries can be performed using a minimally invasive technique called laparoscopic bariatric surgery. During this type of procedure, the surgeons make five or six tiny incisions instead of one large incision to perform the operation. The surgeons use an instrument similar to a telescope, which is placed in the abdomen after it is inflated with gas. The laparoscope is then connected to a tiny camera allows the surgeons to perform the surgery by viewing it on a screen.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity among adults has risen significantly in the U.S. over the last 20 years. In fact, statistics show that 30 percent of adults 20 years of age and older are obese (body mass index [BMI] of 30 or higher). That translates to more than 60 million people. Although reducing the prevalence of obesity among adults is a national health objective, the health of the nation seems to be getting worse instead of better.

Is Bariatric Bypass Surgery For You?

There are two basic types of bariatric surgeries for weight loss: restriction procedures and malabsorption procedures. Restriction procedures reduce the size of the stomach through the use of a gastric band, staples, or both, and do not interfere with the normal digestion process. Malabsorption procedures, on the other hand, reduce the size of the stomach and bypass duodenum, the first segment of the small intestine, and sometimes the whole of the jejunum (the mid-section of the intestines). Some bariatric procedures combine the two.
