The very first slot machine (called 'Liberty Bell') was created by a man called Charles Fay from his workshop in San Francisco in 1887. Slightly smaller than today's average slot machines, Liberty Bell contained 3 reels and 20 symbols and operated pretty much in the same way as today's slot machines. Within a relatively short period of time, Fay's creation became so popular and successful that he began to work overtime in his workshop to meet the demand for his slot machines. Capitalizing on their success, Fay rented the machines to gambling establishments at a 50% commission rate, refusing to sell the manufacturing and distribution rights of his slot machines to gambling manufacturers.

The origin of Blackjack is somewhat unclear. Some people believe that Blackjack originated in French casinos in the early 1700s where it was known as "vingt-et-un" ("20 and 1").

On average, one third of the casino's total revenue is generated by Slot machines. The term "Roulette" is derived from a French word meaning small wheel. The origin of Roulette is not very clear. while some sources state that Blaise Pascal, a 17th Century French mathematician invented the roulette wheel, other sources state that the game originated in China and was brought to Europe by Dominican monks who were trading with the Chinese.

Many times while gambling, I've found myself searching for subtle signs to assist me in making my next bet. For example, if I'm playing roulette and a person in a red blouse stands next to me, then I'll place an outside bet on red. If I'm experiencing very good luck at Blackjack and a less friendly dealer takes over the table, then I'll take it as a sign to move onto another table because my luck is about to change. Superstition and myth have always played a small part in the gambling area. From the common practice of blowing on a set of dice before rolling them, to the not so common practice of carrying a toenail from a horned toad, many gamblers believe that they can actually give their game play an edge by following irrational beliefs that have long been associated with gambling. While most gamblers have adopted their own set of superstitious beliefs and practices, there still remains a common set of beliefs that many gamblers have at one time or another adopted.

Being a fairly regular gambler, I have noticed a few interesting differences between men and women over the many years I've spent on the casino floor. Although these observations are by no means scientific, the general results have more or less been consistent. The results of these observations are as follows:

Roulette is considered t be one of the most popular casino games in the world. It tends to draw players from all types of backgrounds. Being a relatively simple game to understand while offering a diverse range of betting options and payout outcomes is what makes Roulette such a big hit with the players. Roulette is also considered to be one of the casino's biggest money makers because it tends to place the odds in favor of the casino. Whether one is placing bets on an American Roulette Wheel which has 38 numbers (0, 00, 1-36), or on a European Roulette Wheel which has 37 numbers (0, 1-36), the odds are usually in favor of the casino, especially if one places bets such as a straight up bet (a bet covering one single number) or a split bet (a bet covering two numbers). Of course there are other types of bets which will increase the odds in the player's favor such as a dozen bet (a bet covering twelve numbers), or an odd or even bet (a bet covering eighteen numbers), but covering eighteen numbers out of a possible 37 or 38 still places the odds in favor of the casino.

I think this is an all too common issue which faces many players from occasional gamblers to the high rollers.
